The Story of Water on Earth

Water covers nearly three quarters of the earth's surface. Water is stored in many places, including oceans, rivers, streams, ground water, lakes and ponds.  All water on the earth is part of the global water cycle. The water cycle describes the movement of water by processes of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. All living things require water to survive. Water is a natural resource that should be cared for and conserved.

About "One Well"

About This Site:

This site contains a 10-day unit on the global water cycle for third grade. Under the "Lessons/Activities" tab, you will find 10 days of instruction. Each day contains a lesson outline with objectives, materials needed, a brief description of the events of instruction, ideas for differentiation, formative assessments, and additional resources.  The site also includes books, web sites and apps, and a summative assessment for the unit.

About The Author:

My name is Sarah Widmer. I am a graduate student at the University of Richmond in the School of Continuing and Professional Studies. I am studying to become an elementary school teacher. I have had teachers over the years instill in me a love for learning. I am grateful for my third grade teacher who was the first to have high expectations for me. She believed in me and challenged me. I am also grateful for my middle school English teacher who taught me how to think outside the box and articulate my thoughts clearly. And I remember my high school science teacher who cared more about cultivating strong analytical thinking skills and curiosity in her students than how many facts we memorized.  Now as an adult, I love to learn, and I hope to pass on to future generations a love for learning.

About The Theme:

Picture
"Imagine for a moment that all the water on Earth Came from just one well. This isn't as strange as it sounds. All water on Earth is connected, so there really is just one source- one global well- from which we draw our water."  This is a quotation from One Well: The Story of Water on Earth, written by Rochelle Strauss and illustrated by Rosemary Woods. This book serves as an organizing and informational guide for this unit on the global water cycle. Each day of instruction is based on a chapter from this book.
